Instead of laughing off the incredibly unlikelihood, I looked at the data.<\/p>\n<p>If you exclude filmmakers who just make a killer short film and subsequently get notoriety thanks to their name or affiliation (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/the-short-before-the-feature\/\">Disney&#8217;s &#8220;Paperman&#8221; by John Kahrs<\/a>, who is now directing the feature &#8220;Shedd&#8221;), as well as commercially\/celebrity-driven projects (e.g. &#8220;Dr. Horrible&#8221; by Neil Patrick-Harris), here&#8217;s a breakdown of the rare instances where independently-made short films and long-term web series garnered enough festival attention and\/or fans to lead to feature film and broadcast deals, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>SHORT FILMS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><div id=\"attachment_4837\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4837\" src=\"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-evil-dead-short-feature.jpg\" alt=\"1978 short (left) led to the 1981 feature, &quot;The Evil Dead.&quot;\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4837\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This 1978 short (left) led to the 1981 feature, &#8220;The Evil Dead.&#8221;<\/p><\/div><strong>&#8220;Within The Woods&#8221;<\/strong> (1978) by Sam Raimi was the short made over three days for $1,600, which led to the feature film <strong>&#8220;The Evil Dead&#8221;<\/strong> in 1981. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yul22fUJBFc\">Watch the short on YouTube.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Frankenweenie&#8221;<\/strong> (1984) by Tim Burton became a feature by the same name in 2012. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m115Oi4bCeg\">Watch the short on YouTube.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;The Dirk Diggler Story&#8221;<\/strong> (1988) by Paul Thomas Anderson was the precursor to <strong>&#8220;Boogie Nights.&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qnyYGFTg8YI\">Watch the short on YouTube.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Milton&#8221;<\/strong> (1991) by Mike Judge was a series of animated shorts that led the way to <strong>&#8220;Office Space.&#8221;<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UxnVeOqY8W0\">Watch the short on YouTube.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><div id=\"attachment_4839\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4839\" src=\"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/bottle-rocket-short-feature.jpg\" alt=\"1992 short (left) for &quot;Bottle Rocket&quot; The show has since been included on Netflix &#8212; which is on TV and wins Emmys, so perhaps you can call it a network nowadays. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCDsO-0Yo5zpJk575nKXgMVA\">Visit the production company&#8217;s YouTube.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Burning Love&#8221;<\/strong> (2012-Present) by Ken Marino and Erica Oyama was a web series on Yahoo before becoming an E! show (2013-Present). <a href=\"https:\/\/screen.yahoo.com\/burning-love\/\">Visit the Yahoo channel<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcocreate.com\/1682555\/ken-marino-shows-how-to-parody-the-already-ridiculous-with-burning-love\">read an article about Marino and Oyama on FastCoCreate<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you&#8217;ll see, it&#8217;s very rare to make this work, and not as common a model anymore as it was 10 years ago. Today, if not just to do short-format work for the merits of the work itself, there&#8217;s now more than ever the opportunity to sell a short film download online, as a VOD business model. Or consider the commercial \/ branded content route, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/writing-interactive-film-for-the-ipad\/\">&#8220;Touching Stories&#8221;<\/a> for the iPad in 2010.
