{"id":32,"date":"2007-04-08T15:12:43","date_gmt":"2007-04-08T22:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/08\/saul-bass-titles\/"},"modified":"2016-05-16T19:04:37","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T02:04:37","slug":"saul-bass-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/saul-bass-titles\/","title":{"rendered":"Anatomy of a Saul Bass Title Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image33\" alt=\"saul-bass-titles.jpg\" class=\"imageframe imgalignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/saul-bass-titles.jpg\" \/>With Otto Preminger&#8217;s 1959 film <em>Anatomy of a Murder<\/em>, film critic Leo Goldsmith &#8212; a contributor to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reverseshot.com\/\">Reverse Shot<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/\">The Village Voice<\/a> &#8212; describes part of the stark opening sequence: &#8220;Echoing the deliberate manner in which the film dissects the circumstances of a murder case, the credits also provide some witty juxtapositions of titles and images: James Stewart naturally gets the head; Lee Remmick a leg; Duke an arm; and Preminger&#8217;s credit comes once a disembodied hand seems to cover the lens.&#8221; Goldsmith elaborates on an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.notcoming.com\/saulbass\/\">inspiring tribute site<\/a> for Saul Bass at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.notcoming.com\/\">NotComing.com<\/a>, featuring stills and overviews of his title design collaborations.<\/p>\n<p>Bass, who passed away in 1996, was <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.commarts.com\/CA\/feapion\/bass\/\">featured Bass as a design pioneer<\/span> in Communication Arts magazine, who spoke with director Martin Scorsese about his designs. &#8220;Bass fashioned title sequences into an art, creating in some cases, like Vertigo, a mini-film within a film. His graphic compositions in movement function as a prologue to the movie&#8211;setting the tone, providing the mood and foreshadowing the action.&#8221; Bass did the opening titles for Scorsese&#8217;s <em>Goodfellas<\/em>, <em>Cape Fear<\/em> and <em>Casino<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Psycho\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j3QcS2iovss?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>YouTube, as you can expect, has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blogdecine.com\/2007\/04\/06-saul-bass-sus-titulos-de-credito\">most of the opening sequences<\/a>, amalgamated recently at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blogdecine.com\/\">BlogDeCine.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.designmuseum.org\/design\/saul-bass\">A short biography, stills and graphic identities<\/a> are on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.designmuseum.org\/\">DesignMuseum.org<\/a>; a Bass retrospective took place at the London museum last year.<\/p>\n<p>There are also many <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/thedesignencyclopedia.org\/saul_bass\">related links and books<\/span> on <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/thedesignencyclopedia.org\/\">TheDesignEncyclopedia.org<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A retrospective on Bass just ended at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/search\/?w=all&#038;q=saul+bass%2C+skirball&#038;m=text\">Some images<\/a> are on Flickr.<\/p>\n<p>Upcoming April 11, in the world of opening film titles, Kyle Cooper (<em>Se7en<\/em>, <em>Dawn of the Dead<\/em>, <em>Spider-Man<\/em> series) will be <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.aiga-atl.org\/event.jsp?navigation=2&amp;content=269\">speaking on the art of title design at an AIGA Atlanta event<\/span>. Cooper and Bass are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.twenty4.co.uk\/03-articles\/Art%20of%20Fim%20Titles\/main.htm\">often compared<\/a>, but take the introductions in very different directions, as elaborated in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wired\/archive\/12.06\/cooper.html\">Jon M. Gibson&#8217;s article<\/a> for Wired Magazine.
