{"id":1149,"date":"2010-04-23T10:57:45","date_gmt":"2010-04-23T17:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/?p=1149"},"modified":"2016-05-16T19:02:39","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T02:02:39","slug":"problems-with-hulus-new-monthly-subscription","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/problems-with-hulus-new-monthly-subscription\/","title":{"rendered":"Problems with Hulu&#8217;s New Monthly Subscription"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fwdlabs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/hulu.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"hulu\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1164\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hulu just announced a monthly fee of $10 to view part of their video portal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cost is a dollar higher than a basic NetFlix account, which provides a larger archive of disc and streaming media, plus an 11-million strong subscriber base (according to a <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"http:\/\/www.onetrak.com\/Uploads\/grants\/VIDEOTRAK%20October%2009_final.pdf\">onetrack.com<\/span> whitepaper in 10\/2009)<\/li>\n<li>Quantity of advertisements on Hulu is slated to increase, not decrease, to be similar to the quantity on broadcast television<\/li>\n<li>Subscription fee unlocks older episodes, rather than allowing users to see new episodes earlier or another kind of exclusive; right now a show is posted a whole day after its aired on television<\/li>\n<li>Torrent and other bootleg sources make watching television shows for free (and often ad-free) easier than ever<\/li>\n<li>Inventory is still slim and broadcast network-centric, whereas paying a cable bill gives you hundreds of options all day and night<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Train viewers to pay&#8221; is a statement mentioned in the <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/entertainmentnewsbuzz\/2010\/04\/hulu-pushes-forward-with-995-subscription-service.html\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> report, but they&#8217;ve got it backwards: consumers have the upper hand online (see: &#8220;you&#8221; in YouTube)<\/li>\n<li>Each show&#8217;s last five episodes is still free on Hulu<\/li>\n<li>Most of Hulu&#8217;s offerings are locked to U.S. viewership only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some recommendations for Hulu:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compete with cable\/dish providers by providing DVR-influenced ad-free experiences for paid subscriptions<\/li>\n<li>Compete with series DVDs, where you can catch up on past seasons of a show, which follows the lead of some NetFlix offerings; follow the lead of TBS, as noted in recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/19\/business\/media\/19conan.html\">New York Times<\/a> coverage<\/li>\n<li>Play nice with the Wii and other systems like Roku that can deliver HD media to your television; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediapost.com\/publications\/?fa=Articles.showArticle&#038;art_aid=126744\">MediaPost<\/a> has some coverage on NetFlix&#8217;s success with cross-platform usability on the Xbox 360, PS3, Apple TV, and Apple iPad<\/li>\n<li>Provide ad-free and improve quality, offline viewing in order to one-up torrent downloaders<\/li>\n<li>Figure out a way for the actors and crew to get paid fair royalties for all this<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Time will tell if this is a successful business model for Hulu, which has $100 million in revenue from advertisers. Popular shows like <a href=\"http:\/\/thedailyshow.com\/\">The Daily Show<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thecolbertreport.com\/\">The Colbert Report<\/a> are streamed on their official web sites and left Hulu about a month ago.
