Diablo Cody, ex-stripper and blogger from the Midwest, penned <em>Juno<\/em>, her first spec screenplay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/12\/02\/movies\/02carr.html?_r=2&#038;oref=slogin&#038;oref=slogin\">New York Times<\/a> praises the script&#8217;s epicenter:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The movie has all the hallmarks of an art-house film &#8212; endlessly quirky dialogue with a soundtrack to match &#8212; but contains an old-fashioned moral center. At a time when many films about teenagers are a mess of machinations and hookups, <em>Juno<\/em> ends in a very tender hug.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1117975242.html?categoryid=2508&#038;cs=1\">Variety<\/a>, back on November 1, explores Cody&#8217;s need to blog:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s self-publishing. You don&#8217;t have to worry about some donkey in New York sending a letter: &#8216;This doesn&#8217;t serve our needs at this time.&#8217; Instead you start getting fans, validation and the next thing you know, you have a book deal. I never received a rejection letter, never submitted anything in my life.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cody&#8217;s blog got noticed by a talent manager, who eventually got it to Jason Reitman (<em>Thank You for Smoking<\/em>), who directed <em>Juno<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/la-et-cody6dec06,0,1672923.story?coll=la-headlines-calendar\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> speaks to her goals to rock the strong roles:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I have a responsibility to write strong female characters.
