The northern elephant seal, Mirounga angustirostris, is an extraordinary marine mammal:

Synopsis

They migrate thousands of miles, twice a year, to here: Piedras Blancas for birthing, breeding, molting and rest.

They need rest now because they spend 8 - 10 months a year in the open ocean

They dive 1,000 to 5,000 feet deep for periods of fifteen minutes to two hours


Piedras Blancas is on Highway 1, seven miles north of San Simeon on the California Central Coast, home to about 17,000 animals
